Just a note on the fish you mentioned:

-Tangs start out small, but they’ll outgrow a 55 gallon before you know it.
    -Multiple clowns will occassionally fight.
    -Multiple damsels will definitely fight.

Instead, I might recommend chromis. They are of the damsel family, but they’re peaceful schooling fish.

A couple of cardinal fish would work as well, as they gather in groups. If you have experience and know you can keep the water chemistry in excellent condition, a couple of anthias would work, as they tend to school (just don’t keep more than one male).

To battle hair algae, a lawnmower blenny can replace the tangs. Just don’t get more than one as they will fight (I watched with amusement as mine tried to kill his reflection in the glass for more than 2 weeks before he finally gae up).

If you aren’t getting any invertebrates, you can take a flame hawkfish or a longnose hawkfish. Just don’t get more than one hawkfish as they will fight.

There’s a bunch of smallish wrasses that you can get as well…way too many to list here. Just be warned to check out your purchase before you bring it home.

I might recommend avoiding fish that sift through the sand (such as sand-sifting gobies and some scooter blennies); a 55 gallon tank has a good chance of running out of micro-crustaceans to keep them fed unless you plan on setting up a refugium dedicated to food production as well. The same thought applies to a mandarinfish and the copepod population.
