Becoming a fishing guide?
Becoming a fishing guide?
I have been fishing all my life. I can’t remember a time when I wasn’t in, around or on the water. I am coming up on retirement from the Air Force and would love to try my hand at guiding. I know a lot of the waters around my home and there is rarely a day when I go fishing and don’t catch what I am after. I am a pretty decent fly-fisherman and have just started dabbling in Saltwater fly fishing, Iraq Deloyment put the kibosh on my summer plans, but I was wondering what I need to do to get started. Any advice?

In some areas you will need a license and insurance.
If you are using a boat you will also need a captains license(six pack license)
I am not a guide but have read posts about becoming one.
Fish Erie has a member website that you can join and ask about this.

practice, practice, practice. you need to be on the water everyday rain or shine and stay up with what the fish are doing. also be sure and be knowledgeable about what you are fishing for. guides don’t just take you fishing but give you a seminar on the water and can answer all you questions. you should also take a boating safety course even if you think you know it all. also enroll in a red cross first aid and cpr class. good luck in you future endeavers and welcome home from one vet to another.
